Fastt Maths

Published by Colin Becker at 10:56 am under discussion

In weeks 5 and 6 of this term I ran lunch sessions about this software and what it can do.

It is well written and a worthwhile means of getting students (who understand what addition, subtraction, multiplication and division are) to be quick at answering mental computations. Each student is assigned one type of calculation eg addition, and is drilled on them until each fact becomes a ‘fast fact’ – a fact that can be answered in 1 second.

The software provides reports and messages to teachers about individual progress and also allows you to print a worksheet applicable to any individual.

In terms of creative computer software it would get a ‘zero’ – but as a means to develop speed and accuracy it is very good to be used once a day for 5-10 minutes.

I think Fast Maths is great and the boys love it! It’s quite similar to the Mathletics that they loved last year, except better because teachers have access to reports. Very easy to see what basic facts the boys know and how they’ve improved over the term/semester/year.
